FPANY is invited to Join MarketWatch in New York City for a Panel Discussion on Smart-Beta Funds

Since its emergence in 2003, the growth of smart-beta funds has been stunning, representing $30 billion of new investor inflows in 2015 alone. Perhaps because of that breakneck advancement, the product has drawn a tremendous amount of interest and scrutiny in the investment world.

What has led to the popularity of the strategy over more than a decade? How has the proliferation of the category impacted traditional index investing?

That’s what our panel will discuss at a MarketWatch event on Wednesday, May 3, in downtown New York City.

Led by MarketWatch columnist Robert Powell, our panel will explore issues including:

  • Smart-beta ETFs get grouped into certain styles, such as value, quality or dividends? How should investors put these into a broader portfolio?
  • Are multifactor products offering a smoother ride and does the fact that many of them are relatively new matter?
  • Many smart-beta products sound the same but perform differently. How can investors sort through the universe?
  • Does the popularity of smart-beta strategies mean investors should not focus on market cap weighted products?
  • These ETF products tend to be rebalanced regularly. Does that mean there are tax consequences?

Our panel will include three leading voices in smart-beta and factor investing:

  • Erin Gibbs, equity chief investment officer of S&P Investment Advisory Services and vice president equity models management
  • Todd Rosenbluth, director of ETF and mutual fund research at CFRA
  • Jack Vogel, Ph.D., chief investment officer and managing member of Alpha Architect LLC

The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. and concludes at 7:30 p.m., takes place at The Modern, 9 W. 53rd Street, New York City, and will include a panel discussion and reception.

Attendance is free, but an RSVP is required. CFP professionals who attend the panel discussion will receive continuing-education credit. Please contact us at events@marketwatch.com to RSVP.
